Windward Community Fights Cancer
With 4th Annual ‘Windward For A Cure’
Event Began As Way to Honor Friends Who Died of Cancer
ALPHARETTA, GA (January 11, 2008) – The Windward Community in Alpharetta, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, will host the 4th Annual “Windward For A Cure” on Friday, February 22, at 7 p.m. at the Metropolitan Club. The gala, which began seven years ago as a way for a group of women to honor friends who died of cancer, raises money for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer. This year’s goal is $70,000.
This elegant evening will include wine tastings, samples of delicious dishes from a dozen local upscale restaurants, silent and live auctions, cash bar, music and dancing. Neighborhoods within the 2,350-home community will donate “theme baskets” that will be auctioned off along with vacation homes, sports memorabilia, golf rounds, restaurant gift certificates, spa packages and more. Attendees will also be able to purchase an etched glass luminary in honor or memory of a cancer warrior.
“‘Windward for A Cure’ is important because it honors dear friends who have lost their battles with cancer and because it inspires hope for the future and finding a cure for this horrible disease,” said event chair Mindy Jones. “The money we raise goes to fund important research to move us closer to a cure and community programs to support cancer patients. We encourage everyone to come out on February 22 and have a wonderful evening while supporting a very worthwhile cause.”
Tickets are $75 per person before February 12. After that, the price will be $85 per person. Tickets can be purchased online at www.windwardforacure.org.
The event has blossomed from a group of women wanting to honor a tennis friend, Kathleen Dyer, who lost her life to cancer in September 2000. They orchestrated an annual two-day member/guest tennis tournament at the Windward Lake Club that began in the spring of 2000. In October of 2004, another close friend, Priscilla Wiggberg, lost the battle with cancer, and the group took the event a step further by organizing the “Windward for a Cure” wine tasting and silent auction.
Last year, this event raised $62,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year, the committee has set a goal of $70,000, with proceeds going to the Alpharetta office of the American Cancer Society.
